Investigating the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy on the fear of cancer recurrence in patients with colorectal cancer

Abstract :
An increasing number of patients with colorectal cancer suffer from side effects of cancer treatment, which can affect their psychosocial health, including their mood and quality of life. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy on the fear of cancer recurrence in patients with colorectal cancer. This study was semi-experimental with a pre-test-post-test design with a control group. 22 people were selected as the target sample of the research with the purposeful sampling method and then they were randomly divided into two experimental and control groups. The data collection tool was the 42-question Fear of cancer recurrence questionnaire. Questionnaire was completed for both groups. Then, the experimental group participated in cognitive behavioral therapy training sessions for 8 sessions of 90 minutes, but the control group did not receive any intervention. The mean (standard deviation) of the total score of fear of cancer recurrence in the experimental group decreased from pre-test to post-test and the difference was significant but in the control group, these averages did not differ much from each other. Based on the findings of the present study, cognitive behavioral therapy can reduce the fear of cancer recurrence in patients with colorectal cancer.
