Structural relationships of emotional inadequacy and tendency to risky behaviors in adolescents: the mediating role of psychological flexibility

Abstract :
The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating role of psychological flexibility in the relationship between emotional inadequacy and tendency to risky behaviors in adolescents. The descriptive research method was of the correlation type (structural equation model). The statistical population included the teenagers of Shahrood city in 2023, out of which 300 people were selected by available sampling method. The tools used in this research included risk-taking questionnaires of Iranian teenagers, emotional deficiency and psychological flexibility questionnaire. In order to analyze the research model, the structural equation model was used the findings showed that there is a positive and significant relationship between emotional inadequacy and the tendency to risky behaviors, and psychological flexibility plays a mediating role in the relationship between emotional insufficiency and the tendency to risky behaviors. Overall, the results showed that the model had a good fit. According to the obtained results, emotional inadequacy and psychological flexibility play an important role in predicting high-risk behaviors of adolescents. Emotional inadequacy and lack of psychological flexibility can increase the incidence and persistence of high-risk behaviors, including drug use, in teenagers. Therefore, the design of interventions based on improving emotional inadequacy and increasing psychological flexibility is suggested as a basis for reducing the high-risk behaviors of this group of people.
