از بنیادی ترین پرسش های پیش ِ روی سیاست پژوهان، موضوع قدرت، الگوهای توزیع آن، کیفیت رابطۀ حکومت با شهروندان و گروه‌ها و میزان تأثیرگذاری آنها بر فرایند تصمیم‌گیری سیاسی است. هدف کثرت گرایی در مقام رویکردی نظری به سیاست نیز تبیین و ارزیابی این مسایل بود. از اینرو سیاست را عرصۀ رقابت گروه‌های مختلفی تعریف می کرد که به دلیل دسترسی شان به منابع متفاوت، هیچ یک قادر به تسلط کامل بر سایرین نبوده، تصمیمات سیاسی نیز حاصل توازن نیروها و فرایندی گشوده تلقی می‌گشت. این مقاله پس از تبیین این رویکرد در پیوند با اندیشۀ دموکراسی و مقایسۀ برداشت های متقدم و متأخر از آن، به بررسی دلا لت های عینی آن در نظم سیاسی می‌پردازد تا صحت تحلیل های آن را در عمل ارزیابی کند. بنابراین در پاسخ به این پرسش که آیا واقعیت سیاسی موجود، مؤیّد مفروضات تئوریک رویکرد کثرت گراست، موضعی بینابینی (بسته به نوع برداشت از کثرت گرایی) اتخاذ می کند. جنبش&shy;ها ریشه در بحران نمایندگی دارند؛ بحرانی که به شکاف میان خواسته&shy;های شهروندان و نهادهای تصمیم&shy;گیری در دموکراسی&shy;های نمایندگی اشاره دارد. هدف پژوهش حاضر، بررسی این بحران و تحلیل مقایسه&shy;ای مشخصه&shy;&shy;های دو نوع جنبشِ غالب است که در واکنش به بحران یادشده ظاهر شدند. پرسش اصلی مقاله این است که جنبش&shy;های اجتماعی متأخر در لیبرال دموکراسی&shy;های غربی، چه شباهت&shy;ها و تفاوت&shy;&shy;هایی با هم دارند. در پاسخ، فرضیه مقاله این است که در شرایطی که نقطه اشتراک جنبش&shy;های اجتماعی جدید و پوپولیستی در غرب را می&shy;توان در واکنش آنها به بحران نمایندگی در نظام نهادیِ دموکراسی&shy;&shy;های لیبرال غربی دید، این دو نوع جنبش از منظر ایدئولوژی، سازمان، رهبری و نوع تلقی از جامعه سیاسیِ ایده&shy;آل با هم تفاوت می&zwnj;یابند. برای توجیه این فرضیه، یک چارچوب مفهومی
