Abstract :
Childhood adversity is known as one of the strongest predictors of psychological trauma in adulthood; however, not all people with a history of trauma experience suicidal thoughts. The determining factor in this is the way an individual processes and believes about their emotions. The present study aimed to investigate the role of emotional beliefs in predicting suicidal ideation in adults with a history of childhood adversity. This was a descriptive-correlational study. The statistical population consisted of all adults in Semnan who had a history of childhood adversity, of whom 320 were selected through purposive sampling. In this study, the childhood trauma questionnaires of Bremner et al. (2007), suicidal ideation of Beck et al. (1988), and beliefs about emotions of Manser et al. (2012) were used. Pearson correlation test and stepwise regression were used to analyze the data. The results showed that emotional beliefs were positively and significantly correlated with suicidal ideation in adults with a history of childhood adversity. The regression results also indicated that emotional beliefs explained 53% of the variance in suicidal ideation. According to the results obtained, emotional beliefs played an important role in suicidal ideation in adults with a history of childhood adversity. Based on these findings, it is suggested that special attention be paid to the role of emotional beliefs in therapeutic and preventive interventions to prevent the occurrence of self-harming behaviors.
