A Structural Model of the Relationship between Schadenfreude, Emotions, and the Mediating Role of Social Media in Students

Abstract :
This research was conducted in Hamadan in 2024 with the aim of investigating the relationship between schadenfreude and personality traits, focusing on the mediating role of cyberspace among high school students. The research method was descriptive and utilized structural equation modeling. The statistical population consisted of 6,527 male and female high school students in District 1 of Hamadan's Department of Education. A sample of 363 individuals was selected using the Krejcie and Morgan table and a simple random sampling method. For data collection, three standardized questionnaires were used: The Schadenfreude Scale (Yeganeh et al.), the Five-Factor Personality Inventory (Costa & McCrae), and the Cyberspace Scale (Kim et al.). Data analysis was performed using SPSS and Smart PLS software with the structural equation modeling approach. The results showed that the research model was psychometrically valid and had a good fit. Findings indicated that emotions had a significant relationship with schadenfreude among students, both directly and through the mediation of cyberspace. Cyberspace played a strong mediating role in this relationship, meaning that increased use of cyberspace led to an increase in schadenfreude. The results also revealed that emotions had a significant relationship with cyberspace. Therefore, it is possible to control or reduce the negative phenomenon of schadenfreude by controlling emotions and managing cyberspace use in adolescents.
