این مقاله به بررسی استفاده از بازیها در آموزش جغرافیا، از جمله قبل از ظهور بازیهای مبتنی بر رایانه (دیجیتال) میپردازد. محبوبیت روزافزون «بازیهای جدی» و «سرگرمی آموزشی» با تمرکز بر مزایای درک شده آنها در آموزش مبتنی بر کلاس درس، مورد توجه قرار گرفته است. تاری بین بازیهای دیجیتال برای اهداف آموزشی و بازیهای عمدتاً برای سرگرمی مورد بحث قرار گرفته است که منعکس کننده محبوبیت SimCity و پتانسیل این بازیها برای یادگیری در مورد برنامهریزی شهری است. این تجزیه و تحلیل قهرمان بازیهایی میشود که دانشآموزان را قادر میسازد نقشهای متفاوتی را بازی کنند و نتایج واقعی «زندگی واقعی» را تولید کنند. دو نمونه از بازیهای رومیزی غیر دیجیتالی، مشارکتشناسی و ژئوگوپولی، نشان میدهند که چگونه ایفای نقش درک دانشآموزان از برنامهریزی و جغرافیای انسانی را گسترش میدهد.
